About

In this 9th grade high school course, students study literature by genres, i.e. short stories, novels, poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction. Students use the literature as a starting point for enhancing their reading, writing, speaking, listening, research, and critical thinking skills. In addition to studying and analyzing various literary selections, students also receive instruction in writing, vocabulary, and grammar, mostly in conjunction with the various reading selections, but also through our supplemental texts and during direct writing instruction. Because much of good writing is achieved by good editing, students should expect to write several drafts of any assigned papers. Compositions will consist of multiple in-class writings and various paragraph constructions with the goal of producing several larger pieces. Students also have the opportunity to compose a few creative pieces as well. Textbook/materials: Adventures in Reading, Athena Edition.
